The French Steel Technical Association (ATS) was founded on March, 29 ,1946 in order to promote the technical progress in the French Steel Industry .
Nowadays , ATS is one of the Integrated Services making up the French Steel Federation  and it covers the European countries near France.

The main goal for ATS is to continuously improve the technical and managerial knowledge of the technical managers. To achieve this mission, ATS has a skill oriented organization and the Engineers Committees are the main stucture ; they are a place where experts in steelmaking process can exchange their experiences , knowledges , informations and common works.

The Charter of the Committees defines the role of the steering committees which organize the work of each committee and define the program of CESSID for training.

Another important scope is to develop contacts with foreign countries by :

- common  working  in the European Committees
- developing technical cooperation with other countries on the basis of reciprocal exchanges
- participating in major meetings and congresses
- participating in the work of international organizations in particular the IISI
- maintening contacts with other Associations involved in Steelmaking.

Each year in December, ATS organizes the International Steelmaking Conference gathering, in Paris, 700 experts coming from all over the world.
ATS also organizes the international congresses which take place in France under the patronage of ESIC.
